The history of the College of Business Education (CBE) is intertwined with the history of the nation.

Soon after its independence on December 9, 1961, the newly independent state discovered a shortage of trained personnel for commercial and industrial activities.

There were very few nationals with commercial education and experience at the time. As a result of the need to train nationals for the commercial sector, the country established a business training institute.

In January 1965, His Excellency, J.K. Nyerere, the first President of the United Republic of Tanzania, officially opened the new College in Dar es Salaam. The College was formally renamed “College of Business Education” (CBE).

The College has grown in size over the years, and a second campus in Dodoma opened in October 1983. This campus was also inaugurated by then-President Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere.

In December 2007, the College opened a new campus in Mwanza. In 2013, the College opened a new campus in Mbeya, where it now offers Ordinary Diploma and Basic Certificate courses.

From one (1) in 1965 to ten (10) in 2018, the number of programmes has increased. These programmes are available at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels on all campuses.

Currently, the College has 6740 students enrolled across all campuses.

The CBE Vision

To be a pioneer in the transformation and development of business education capabilities.

The CBE Mission

To provide demand-driven and competency-based education, as well as high-quality public services through applied research and consulting.
