In the early 1960s, the government of Tanganyika asked the country’s Christian churches to help establish a referral and teaching hospital for the Northern Zone.
Tanganyika’s Lutheran, Anglican, and Moravian churches formed the Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF), which planned and raised funds
From both local and international partners to build and equip the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) for service, teaching, and research.
After the hospital buildings were completed, the KCMC opened in March 1971 and was immediately taken over by the Tanzanian government. However, it was returned to the GSF in August 1992.
Changes in government policy to liberalise the economy and provide social services rekindled a desire for higher education within the Tanzanian Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCT).
The ELCT Executive Council decided in 1993 to establish “Tumaini University,” which would include, among other things, The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College.
