1.0 INTRODUCTION

This exam format for the Kiswahili subject is based on the amendments made in the 2019 format issued by the Tanzania Examinations Council.

This format is based on the summary of the Kiswahili lesson for the year 2010.

The improvements made in this format are related to the format of the test.

In addition, no improvements have been made in the general objectives, the skills that are measured, and the topics that will be examined.

2.0 GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The general objectives of the test are to measure to what extent the candidate can:

<> communicate in Kiswahili fluently in various fields of life;

<> to determine indicators of the appreciation of Kiswahili as an important part of Tanzanian culture;

<> to show inquisitive skills and develop various issues of Kiswahili language and literature;

<> use literary works in everyday life;

<> use the Kiswahili language in various contexts;

<> identify various ways of promoting and spreading Kiswahili so that it can be used for communication with neighboring and international countries;

<> to read various Kiswahili texts; building a better and stronger foundation for learning and self-development; and

<> using Kiswahili to acquire knowledge, direction and social, cultural, technological and academic skills from within and outside the country.

3.0 GENERAL SKILLS

The test using this format will focus on testing the candidate’s skills and performance in:

3.1 listening and communicating in standard Kiswahili in various contexts;

3.2 to identify indicators of the value of Kiswahili as the national language;

3.3 read various Kiswahili texts effectively;

3.4 write short and long news in standard Kiswahili;

3.5 reading for understanding and self-study to gain knowledge and entertainment;

3.6 use literary language in communication considering all language skills and;

3.7 to research various aspects of the Kiswahili language.

4. EXAMINATION RUBRIC

The test will be conducted for three (3) hours. The exam will have one (1) paper divided into parts A, B and C with a total of 11 questions.

The candidate will be required to answer all the questions in parts A and B and two (2) questions from part C. The test will have a total of 100 marks.

Section A will have two (2) questions. The first question will be to choose the correct answer with 10 elements. Each element will have one (1) mark, so the question will have a total of 10 marks.

The second question will be a pairing with six (6) elements. Each element will have one (1) mark, so the question will have a total of six (6) marks. This part will have a total of 16 marks.

Section B will have six (6) short answer questions. Each question will carry nine (9) marks. Thus, this part will have 54 marks.

Section C will have three (3) essay questions. The candidate will be required to answer two (2) questions where one question will be mandatory. Each question will have a weight of 15 marks. So this section will have a total of 30 marks.
