Mathematics is the science and study of quality, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjectures, and establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions

The main branches of mathematics are algebra, number theory, geometry and arithmetic. Based on these branches, other branches have been discovered. Before the advent of the modern age, the study of mathematics was very limited.

A number is an arithmetic value used for representing the quantity and used in making calculations. A written symbol like “3” which represents a number is known as numerals. A number system is a writing system for denoting numbers using digits or symbols in a logical manner.

Numbers are the most fundamental thing invented by mankind to serve its vast variety of endeavors in science and technology. A number is a basic component of mathematics. Numbers are used for counting, measuring, keeping things in order, indexing, etc.

**There are different types of numbers like **

- natural numbers
- integers
- rational numbers
- irrational numbers
- real numbers
- complex numbers
- prime numbers
- composite numbers
- algebraic numbers
- transcendental numbers
- even and
- odd numbers

**Natural Numbers** – Common counting numbers.

**Prime Number** – A natural number greater than 1 which has only 1 and itself as factors.

**Composite Number** – A natural number greater than 1 which has more factors than 1 and itself.

**Whole Numbers** – The set of Natural Numbers with the number 0 adjoined.

**Integers** – Whole Numbers with their opposites (negative numbers) adjoined.

**Rational Numbers** – All numbers which can be written as fractions.

**Irrational Numbers** – All numbers which cannot be written as fractions.

**Real Numbers** – The set of Rational Numbers with the set of Irrational Numbers adjoined.

**Complex Number** – A number which can be written in the form a + bi where a and b are real numbers and i is the square root of -1.
