NIT’s History

The National Institute of Transport (NIT) is a public higher learning institution located one kilometre west of Dar es Salaam City, along Mabibo Road in the Ubungo Light Industrial area.

NIT was founded in 1975 as the National Transport Corporation’s training arm (NTC). NIT was tasked with improving the human resource capabilities of NTC’s subsidiary companies’ transport operatives and middle-level managers.

National Bus Services Limited (KAMATA), Usafiri Dar-as-Salam Limited (UDA), Regional Transport Companies (RETCOs), and others were among these subsidiary companies.

It was realised in 1982 that there was a need for an Institute that would cover all modes of transportation. The Institute’s activities and responsibilities expanded.

As a result, NIT was re-established as an autonomous Higher Learning Institution under the then Ministry of Communications and Works under NIT Act No. 24 of 1982.

It went into effect on July 1, 1983, with the publication of Government Notice No. 91. The Institute is currently under the Ministry of Transport. The Institute was given legal status, and the Governing Council was given the authority to govern and administer the Institute.
